Spay & Neuter in Medley, FL — Serving Hialeah, Doral & Miami Springs

One of the Most Important Decisions You'll Make for Your Pet
Spaying or neutering your dog or cat does more than prevent unwanted litters — it's one of the most impactful things you can do for their long-term health and behavior. At Animal General Hospital, we perform routine and more complex spay/neuter procedures for dogs and cats of all ages, right here in our own surgical suite.

Why Spay/Neuter Matters

  • Health benefits. Spaying female pets before their first heat cycle greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumors and eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra). Neutering male pets eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems.

  • Behavior benefits. Neutered males are typically less likely to roam, mark territory, or show aggression driven by hormones. Spayed females won't go into heat, which eliminates the yowling, pacing, and attracting-unwanted-attention that comes with it.

  • Community impact. Spaying and neutering remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of homeless and euthanized pets in South Florida shelters each year.

What To Expect
Pre-surgical exam. Every spay/neuter patient gets a physical exam and, when appropriate, pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make sure they're a good candidate for anesthesia.

The procedure. Performed under general anesthesia with full monitoring throughout, in our on-site surgical suite — no outside referral needed.

Recovery. Most pets go home the same day with clear aftercare instructions. Our team will walk you through activity restrictions, incision care, and what's normal versus what warrants a call.

When Should My Pet Be Spayed or Neutered?

Timing depends on your pet's breed, size, and individual health — there's no single right age for every animal. Some pets are ready as early as a few months old, while larger breeds may benefit from waiting longer. Our team will recommend the right timeline for your specific puppy or kitten at their wellness visits.

Common Questions We Hear

  • "Is it too late to neuter my adult dog/cat?" Adult pets can absolutely still be spayed or neutered — behavior and health benefits still apply, and older pets are simply monitored a bit more closely during anesthesia.

  • "Will my pet's personality change?" No — spay/neuter doesn't change your pet's core personality. What it often reduces is hormone-driven behavior like roaming, marking, and heat cycles.

  • "How long is recovery?" Most pets are back to normal within 10-14 days, with activity restricted during that window to protect the incision site.
